Saturday, January 6th

This is Mama Gayle. The team will be returning from safari tonight and I am sure they will have many exciting stories to share. Dr. Ayan Goswami will arrive tonight via Kenya airways. He is a foot/ankle specialist from Florida and will be working with the team up at Bugando. We will fly there in the am and then will get settled in the hotel and then having the doctors and surgical team over for supper so the teams can meet each other and answer questions that they may have before starting our week.

We brought in 121 patients from outreach clinics and 57 of them have had surgeries. The others received diagnostic test and then given medications and other treatments for their medical issues. I referred the patients to my friends and doctors that I have worked with for years at Selian Hospital. This included a General Surgeon, Pediatrician, Internal Medicine Doctor, Urologist, OB/GYN doctor, Dermatology Clinic, Eye Clinic and Orthopedic Surgeon. I have spent the last few days following up with all these doctors on how the patients are doing and what our future plans are for them. Some of the surgeries will be done next week, along with the eye clinic.

I love working at Selian because the staff are awesome and great to work with. They truly care about their patients. They are so friendly and inviting to my medical teams and do a lot of teaching with the students. They are long time friends and I have worked with them a lot so I know my patient’s will receive really good care . Also it is very important to me to do follow-up on these patients after they come in for their follow-up visits and the doctors are so good at sending me reports. We just don’t come to do but want to know what we have done is helping them and if not we will advise otherwise.

Before surgery                                      After surgery (life Changing)

The lives of many people have been changed during this visit. I can’t thank the donors enough for your financial support and my medical bill is going to be high.

I was in the OR one day and a radiologist came to me with an urgent look on his face and told me about his niece that was suffering at home with fever, chills and severe abdominal pain and these people had no money. I had them bring the 11 year old girl to ER and the General Surgeon and I went to examine her. We did an abdominal sonogram and she had a lot of rebound tenderness which indicated an appendicitis and this was confirmed with the sonogram. The girl was taken to surgery and had a ruptured appendix and is now recovering very well. I praise God for sending her to me so that we could help. She is a beautiful young girl.

I ask for your continual prayers as we travel to Bugando to work. Also prayers for healing for our patients and God’s guidance on what patients we needin the OR one day and a radiologist came to me with an urgent look on his face and told me about his niece that was suffering at home with fever, chills and severe abdominal pain and these people had no money. Here is what I read to the team after they have been in Africa a few days.  This place is truly my second home and I love the people.
