We have made it to our last blog of the trip! We are so sad to be done but so extremely thankful for this amazing opportunity. The whole group went to the Bugando medical center. Grace stayed in the operating room with Gayle and Dr. Alex where she got to assist on a knee replacement and also observe a hip replacement. The first case of the day was unfortunately the young girl that we gave a hip replacement on Tuesday. Her hip came out of place last night so this morning they were able to do a closed reduction as a temporary solution as they plan on revising her hip next week with a special implant. Today was a great day in the operating room as we got four cases done by five o’clock!

At the end of the day, Jacky and Grace got to observe the neurosurgeon do burr holes on a patient who had a brain bleed. They were in awe during the whole surgery! Gayle brought cameras to the operating room to get telemedicine in the hospital and they worked great today! These will be used as a tool for residents to learn as they will be able to stream surgeries in a classroom where they can write notes. The cameras will also allow doctors from the US such as Dr. Alex to tune in during difficult cases to help out along with learn from the cases. Gayle was doing a happy dance in the OR because of this achievement!
This is the cross above the main entrance into the hospital it really touched me . Also we have a preop check list and at the end Gayle said a special prayer for the doctors and patients.
Melissa and Jacky were able to see the roles of the nurses on the floor today! Melissa went to the labor and delivery floor and Jacky went to the orthopedic floor. Jacky was able to perform dressing changes on various patients. She also got to assist on sterilizing equipment which was cool for her to see! She was able to help with transport as well, taking patients to X-ray, ECG, and echo. At the end of her day, she was able to experience rounds with the doctors. Today was an emotional day as many of the dressing changes were on severe wounds on young children. Melissa started her day with a tour of the unit. She got the opportunity to be in rounds with the residents as well! She was also able to visit the nursery and see all the new babies! Unfortunately she didn’t see a birth today but saw many patients in active labor.
Gayle and Dr. Alex finished the day with an evaluation meeting with Sister who is head of clinical services and they are very thankful for what Hope Ministries has done in their hospital!
The group saying goodbye to Sister, who is the head of clinic services and with Dr Swetala, who we did total joints with all week. He is one of Hope Ministries first residents we sponsored. He has made Mama Gayle proud!
