In Luke 10, Jesus notices three men: a priest, a Levite and a Samaritan whom all pass by a man left wounded and weak in the streets. Jesus takes special notice with each of their actions. The priest and the Levite wander past without offering up or extending one hand as a helping aid. As the Samaritan walks past, he stops, takes his time and has pity on this poor man and proceeds to go one step further by bandaging up his wounds, pouring oil and wine over his hurt and bringing this frail man to an inn where he provides a place of rest for him.
“Which one of these,” Jesus asks, “was a true, genuine neighbor to this man who fell into the hands of the robbers?”
The expert answers, “The one who had mercy on him.”
Nodding in approval, Jesus commands to the rest of the group, “Go and do likewise.”
How often do we pass up an opportunity to be that helping hand in life? Whether it be the man on the street needing food for his family or the children abandoned left with no place to sleep to the neighbor with cancer who can no longer support his own family. How often do our desires shift focus and our eyes turn back inward towards our own wants and needs when little opportunities pass by where a helping hand could have been extended.
Our helping hands do not go unnoticed by our Heavenly Creator. We should be consistently striving for the opportunity to go, spread His Love and do likewise just as Jesus commanded and love our neighbor just as the Samaritan resembled.
We, at Hope Ministries, do out best to extend many giving hands to those in need both near and far, and we always welcome other servants into our ministries whose hearts yearn to do the same.
